Spitfires scrambling over England, desert skies over North Africa, smoke rising above Pearl Harbor: Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII builds its campaign out of the air war's most dramatic moments and drops you straight into the cockpit. Ubisoft's arcade-style flight game first took off on Xbox 360 and PC in 2006, and this Wii version reworks the flying around Nintendo's motion controls, with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk putting the stick and throttle in your hands.

The campaign follows your squadron across the major theaters of the war, and the missions vary nicely: dogfights against swarms of enemy fighters, escorts protecting vulnerable bombers, and strikes on ships and ground targets. Your wingmen are part of the gameplay rather than background chatter. Each one has a specialty you can call on mid-mission, from patching up your damage to taking the fight to enemy planes or picking out targets, and knowing when to lean on them can turn a losing mission around.

The hangar is a tour of WWII aviation, filled with famous fighters and bombers of the era, and the arcade handling keeps the focus on spectacle rather than simulation homework. Barrel rolls, tight turns and diving attack runs come quickly, and the presentation leans into the feel of a classic war film, with radio chatter between squadron mates and a stirring orchestral score driving the action.

Flight combat games were never plentiful on the Wii, which makes this an unusual pick for the console: a full WWII air campaign with motion-driven flying, aimed at players who want the drama of the era without a manual full of switches and gauges. The game features squadron-based combat, which lets you use the individual characteristics of your wingmen to complete the 18-mission single-player campaign. Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII uses the graphical power of the Xbox 360 to accurately model battle sites--such as England, Morocco, and Pearl Harbor--and the 38 aircraft included in the game. Up to 16 players can battle via Xbox Live in both competitive and cooperative game modes.
