Twin water cannons, a heavy shell and 100 HP: Blastoise was the Water-type heavyweight of the original Base Set, and its holofoil card captures everything that made the first run of the TCG feel electric. As the fully evolved form of Squirtle, it has been a fan favorite since the very beginning of the Pokémon franchise, and Ken Sugimori's artwork places it front and center in that distinctive early-set style that instantly transports you back to 1999.
On the gameplay side, Blastoise's Rain Dance Pokémon Power is a piece of TCG history in its own right. As often as you like during your turn, it lets you attach a Water Energy card to one of your Water Pokémon, on top of your normal attachment, and that unlimited acceleration fueled Hydro Pump, an attack that hits harder for every extra Water Energy attached. Rain Dance decks were among the first archetypes players discovered that bent the rhythm of a normal turn, and veterans still bring them up when they reminisce about the Base Set era.
The Base Set holds a singular place in trading card history as the set that launched the Pokémon TCG in the West, and the three fully evolved starter holos, Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise, sit at the top of its hierarchy. This is the Base Set holofoil Blastoise, card number 2/102, illustrated by Ken Sugimori. It completes the starter trio, anchors a vintage binder and still draws eyes whenever it hits the table.
