Item Description

Most red decks have to scrape for a way to reset the board. Blasphemous Act solves that problem with a single, wonderfully brutal sentence: it deals 13 damage to each creature, which is enough to flatten nearly anything that is not indestructible. The catch looks steep on paper, since it is a nine-mana sorcery, but it costs one generic mana less for each creature on the battlefield, counting everyone's. On a crowded Commander table it routinely comes down for one or two mana, and the more threatening the board gets, the cheaper the answer becomes.

That scaling cost is what keeps it near the top of EDHREC's most-played lists. It slots into almost any red deck as a safety valve, and it gets even better in builds that profit from mass death: sacrifice and death-trigger payoffs, indestructible threats that shrug off the damage, or token decks that simply rebuild faster than everyone else. First printed in Innistrad, it has been a Commander-precon regular ever since.

This is the Commander 2018 printing, collector number 120, illustrated by Daarken, in non-foil. Its flavor text is a grim line from Thalia, Knight-Cathar: “Holy places are no longer sanctuary from death, and death is no longer sanctuary from anything.”
