Item Description

A plane goes down in the middle of the Atlantic, a lone survivor swims through burning wreckage to a lighthouse, and a bathysphere carries him down to a city that should not exist. "No gods or kings. Only man." Andrew Ryan built Rapture beneath the ocean as a haven from government and religion, and by the time you arrive in 1960 it has torn itself apart. Splicers, citizens warped by the gene-altering substance ADAM, stalk its art deco halls, and lumbering Big Daddies in diving-suit armor guard the eerie Little Sisters who harvest it.

BioShock turns everything into a weapon. Plasmids let you send Electro Bolt through standing water, set enemies ablaze with Incinerate, unleash Insect Swarm, or catch a grenade with Telekinesis and hurl it back. Hacking turns turrets and security bots to your side, Gene Tonics shape your play style, ammo variants stretch scarce resources, and the wrench is never far from your hand. Every Big Daddy is a tactical puzzle, and every Little Sister left behind poses the game's famous moral question: rescue her, or harvest her for more power.

2K Boston, led by Ken Levine, designed it as a spiritual successor to System Shock 2, and Rapture is the star. The flooded Medical Pavilion, the overgrown forest of Arcadia and the twisted theater of Fort Frolic, where the mad artist Sander Cohen stages his performances, are among the most atmospheric places in console gaming, and audio diaries scattered through the city tell the story of its collapse one voice at a time. Garry Schyman's string score and the crackling period songs drifting out of jukeboxes give it a melancholy all its own, and the voice of Atlas on your radio leads to a midgame twist that is still discussed as one of the best in the medium.

The Platinum Hits label marks Microsoft's reissue line for the Xbox 360's best-selling games, and BioShock earned its place there. It is the rare shooter remembered as much for its ideas about free will and ambition as for its combat, and the Xbox 360 is where most console players first descended into Rapture in 2007.

About the game

BioShock is a horror-themed first-person shooter set in a steampunk underwater dystopia. The player is urged to turn everything into a weapon: biologically modifying their own body with Plasmids, hacking devices and systems, upgrading their weapons, crafting new ammo variants, and experimenting with different battle techniques are all possible. The game is described by the developers as a spiritual successor to their previous PC title System Shock 2. BioShock received high praise in critical reviews for its atmospheric audio and visual quality, absorbing and original plot and its unique gaming experience.
