Item Description

Every robot on Earth stops working at once, and a computerized voice issues a challenge: send a fighter into the Labyrinths of War and win, and humanity gets its machines back; lose, and humanity is enslaved. That is the setup of Bionic Battler, a 1992 Game Boy release published by Electro Brain and developed by Toei Animation, and it leads into something surprisingly ambitious for the little handheld: robot combat seen in first person through your battlesuit's visor.

You choose between two Bionic Battlebots, the squat, powerful Valiant or the lanky, quick Sirius, then hunt enemy machines through mazes across five levels, facing three opponents on the first stage and seven by the last. An overhead map and a short-range radar run alongside the 3-D view, and combat is about spacing. Punches only land up close, while missiles reach farther but must be charged first, and taking a hit mid-charge throws that stored energy away. Vitality Capsules and Energy Batteries scattered through the labyrinth keep you fighting, and you can switch on two computer-controlled option robots to back you up.

There is plenty of personality, too. The options let you set the background music to Country and Western, Japanese Funk or Disco, and a two-player mode links two Game Boys so both Battlebots can take the field. Bionic Battler is a quirky early attempt at first-person action on Nintendo's handheld, a curio that shows how far developers were willing to push the Game Boy.
