Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

In Berzerk you are a lone humanoid trapped in a maze of electrified walls, shooting your way from room to room as robots close in, and if you linger too long, Evil Otto, a bouncing smiley face, comes to finish the job. Stern's 1980 arcade hit was one of the great early shooters, and Atari's 1982 2600 conversion captures its tension remarkably well.

Every room is a quick tactical puzzle. Robots patrol the corridors and fire back, walls kill on contact and there is always an exit somewhere, so you are constantly deciding whether to clear the room for the bonus or bolt for the door. The robots aren't brilliant (they will happily walk into walls or shoot each other), but they grow more dangerous as you push deeper, and a room full of them can turn chaotic fast.

Evil Otto is the game's masterstroke. He bounces relentlessly toward you, passes straight through walls and exists only to stop you from playing it safe. The 2600 version lets you pick from several game variations that change how Evil Otto and the robots behave, which lets you set the difficulty to your nerves.

Its central idea, an unkillable pursuer who punishes anyone who dawdles, has echoed through game design ever since, and the 2600 cartridge is the version that brought it home for many players. It is still a great quick-play pick, built on early arcade design at its sharpest.
