A tornado tears across the map, flinging debris and vehicles into the sky while two 64-player armies keep fighting around it. That is the kind of moment Battlefield 2042 was built to create. DICE’s 2021 entry pushed the series’ all-out warfare to a new scale, with 128-player battles on the Xbox Series X and the other current-generation platforms, enormous maps and weather that can turn a match without warning.

The setting is a near future shaped by climate collapse, where displaced, stateless soldiers known as No-Pats fight on both sides of a war between the United States and Russia. The maps lean hard into that idea: a rocket launch in progress on Orbital in French Guiana, sandstorms sweeping through Doha on Hourglass, a frozen research station on Breakaway in Antarctica and the towers of Kaleidoscope in South Korea. Conquest and Breakthrough anchor the All-Out Warfare experience, with tanks, jets, helicopters and hovercraft in the thick of it.

Instead of traditional classes, 2042 launched with Specialists, each built around a signature gadget or trait: Mackay’s grappling hook, Sundance’s wingsuit, Falck’s healing syringe pistol, Boris’s sentry gun and Casper’s recon drone. Battlefield Portal is the big draw for longtime fans. It recreates classic maps, weapons and vehicles from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, and lets players build custom rule sets, so World War II armor can square off against modern hardware. Hazard Zone, a squad-based extraction mode, rounded out the launch lineup.

Its history is part of the story. 2042 had a rocky launch, and DICE spent the seasons that followed adding maps and Specialists and reworking systems in response to players. It was designed entirely around online multiplayer, with no traditional single-player campaign, and the series’ squad play is at its best here when four players move together, reviving, resupplying and spotting for one another across a map that can be torn apart around them. What it offers is the series at its biggest and most chaotic: the entry where Battlefield bet everything on scale, storms and sandbox spectacle.
