Some games start with a design document. Battle Princess Madelyn started with a little girl who wanted to be the hero. Developer Chris Obritsch of Casual Bit Games built it around his daughter Madelyn, and the result is a pixel-art love letter to Capcom's Ghouls 'n Ghosts starring a young knight-in-training and her ghostly dog, Fritzy.

The quest sends Madelyn and Fritzy out to save her kingdom and her family from an evil wizard, through stage after stage of undead-infested territory. Weapons drop as you fight, each with its own arc, spread or quirk, and you swap between your two most recent finds as the situation demands. Madelyn also handles more freely than Sir Arthur ever did, with a double jump and the ability to change direction in mid-air, which makes the old formula feel a little more forgiving in the hands.

The Royal Edition is a remixed version of the game. It sets aside the original release's exploration-heavy Story Mode in favor of a fully redesigned and expanded Arcade Mode, adds a tougher, melee-focused King Daddy mode for players who want a real test, and offers the soundtrack in both Orchestra and Arcade flavors, the latter written to evoke the spirit of Capcom's CPS2 arcade hardware.

It is a demanding game with the old-school difficulty its inspirations were known for, and critics were split on its stage readability and boss encounters. But its sprite work is lovely, its nods to Ghouls 'n Ghosts and the Midnight Wanderers stages of Three Wonders are spot on, and its heart is in exactly the right place. Players raised on Capcom's arcade era will recognize the tribute, and it is an easy one to share with a young knight of your own.
