Item Description
Batterskull is a five-mana artifact that shows up with its own body. Living weapon creates a 0/0 Phyrexian Germ and straps the Equipment to it on arrival, so you immediately have a 4/4 with vigilance and lifelink that attacks, blocks and gains life every turn. Answer the Germ and the Equipment is still there; aim removal at the Equipment and you can pay three to return it to your hand, then cast it again for a brand-new Germ.
That resilience is why it became a famous Stoneforge Mystic target and a long-running pick for artifact and Equipment decks. The equip cost of five is steep, but you rarely need it: Batterskull is its own creature, its own removal-dodger and its own life-gain engine in one card.
Batterskull debuted in New Phyrexia. This is the Grand Prix promo printing, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, in foil; Grand Prix promos were handed to players at Magic's large open tournaments, so this version carries a piece of organized-play history.
