Gotham has rarely felt as dark, dangerous and alive as it does on this Sunsoft cartridge. Loosely based on the 1989 Tim Burton film, Batman: The Video Game reached the NES in early 1990 and quickly earned a reputation as one of the best licensed games on the console, winning Electronic Gaming Monthly's award for Best Movie-to-Game of 1989. It borrows the film's mood more than its plot, and the result is a tough, tightly built action platformer that stands on its own.

Batman moves with a weight and responsiveness that still holds up. His wall jump, which recalls the wall-scaling of Ninja Gaiden, lets him kick off vertical surfaces and climb through stages in ways few NES heroes could, and his punch is backed by a rotating arsenal of the Batarang, the Batdisk and the Batpoon, all fueled by pellet cartridges collected along the way. Five stages lead from the Gotham City streets through the Axis Chemical Plant, the Gotham sewers and a mysterious laboratory to the belltower of Gotham Cathedral, and the boss lineup includes Killer Moth, the Electrocutioner and Firebug before the final showdown with the Joker.

Then there is the music. Composed by Naoki Kodaka and Nobuyuki Hara, the Batman soundtrack ranks among the most celebrated on the NES, with a driving, bass-heavy sound that pushes the hardware to its limits, and the opening stage theme is a favorite in chiptune circles to this day. Sunsoft was at the peak of its 8-bit powers here, and its audio team's work is a big part of why the game is remembered so fondly.

Sunsoft followed it with Batman: Return of the Joker, but many fans still consider this first effort the studio's best Batman game. It is challenging, atmospheric and polished, a high point for licensed games on the NES, and an easy pick for Batman fans and anyone building a library of the console's best action titles.

Batman: The Video Game, is a group of platform games developed by Sunsoft for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy, loosely based on the 1989 film of the same name. Despite having the same title, each is actually a different game. The NES title is arguably the best known and contains five levels culminating in a final showdown with the Joker in the bell tower of Gotham Cathedral. It was received well despite changes from the movie upon which it was based. Sunsoft later released Batman: Return of the Joker as a follow-up which is not related to any movie.
