Item Description

In 1995 Acclaim had some of the hottest technology in games and the biggest superhero film of the summer, and Batman Forever is what happened when the two collided. Probe Entertainment built the game on the Mortal Kombat II engine, and Batman, Robin and the thugs of Gotham are digitized, motion-captured sprites that move with the photographic, slightly uncanny realism of Acclaim's fighting-game era. Nothing else on the Genesis looks quite like it.

That fighting-game DNA runs all the way through the controls. Batman and Robin each have move lists and button sequences to learn, and some gadget moves require stepping away from an enemy just before a punch or kick, which makes the game feel closer to a side-scrolling Mortal Kombat than to Final Fight. Before each level you kit out your hero with three standard gadgets plus two more picked from a list, and four hidden blueprint gadgets are waiting for players who dig deeper. Between the brawls, Gotham's stages mix in light puzzle-solving, and the villains of the film, Two-Face and the Riddler, are behind the chaos.

Two players can team up as the Dynamic Duo in two different ways: a cooperative mode where Batman and Robin cannot hurt each other and share credits, and a rowdier mode where they can trade blows and each keep their own credits while still taking on Gotham's gangs. There is also a Training mode that lets you fight as Batman, Robin or even the enemies, against the computer, a second player or a pair of computer opponents working together.

Critics were not kind. Next Generation gave it one star out of five, and GamePro hit the Super NES version hard for its difficulty and lack of continues while conceding that the digitized sprites were done well. That notoriety is now part of the appeal. Batman Forever is a vivid artifact of the moment when Hollywood blockbusters and digitized graphics were going to be the future of console games, a stern, strange brawler from the Val Kilmer era of the Caped Crusader, and a conversation piece on any Batman or Acclaim-era shelf.
