Item Description

Blackgate Prison has fallen, and three of Gotham's worst have carved it up between them. The Joker, the Penguin and Black Mask each hold a section of the island penitentiary, and Batman has to fight his way in and take it back. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate takes the Arkham series into two and a half dimensions, reworking its gadgets and brawling into a side-scrolling, exploration-driven adventure in the Metroidvania mold.

Set a few months after Arkham Origins, the story opens with Batman catching Catwoman mid-heist and sending her to Blackgate, only for her to become his reluctant inside source once the riot breaks out. She feeds him intel in exchange for her own safety, and their uneasy partnership drives the plot, told through comic-strip-style animated cutscenes that look sharp on the Vita screen. You choose whose territory to tackle first, though progress often means circling back to an earlier wing with a new tool in hand, and hidden WayneTech gear rewards the players who poke into every vent.

The developer was Armature Studio, founded by veterans of Retro Studios' Metroid Prime team, and that lineage shows everywhere: gated paths, gadget upgrades like batarangs that pop open grates, and a detective mode you trigger by tapping the touch screen and sweeping a finger across it to scan for clues and weak points. Combat keeps the counter-driven rhythm of the console games, adapted to a flat plane where crowds of inmates close in from both sides.

Critics were divided, and some found the backtracking and the map frustrating, so this one suits players who like untangling a labyrinth rather than following a waypoint. Its appeal is in what it tries: a different shape for the Arkham formula, a story built around Batman and Catwoman's prickly alliance, and a prison crawl from a team that knows the genre. It is also the only Arkham game made for the Vita, which makes it a natural pickup for anyone filling out the series beyond the console entries.
