Item Description

It starts with a routine delivery. Batman drives the Joker back to Arkham Asylum, walks him through intake and watches the whole thing turn into a trap, as the Clown Prince of Crime seizes the island and locks the Dark Knight inside with every inmate it holds. What follows is one long, brilliantly paced night of detective work, brawling and stalking through the shadows.

Rocksteady Studios built the 2009 game around a simple promise: make the player feel like Batman. The freeflow combat system lets you chain strikes, counters and gadget moves across a whole crowd of thugs with a rhythm that is easy to learn and deeply satisfying to master, and it became the template that action games borrowed for the next decade. The predator rooms are just as clever. Perched on stone gargoyles above armed guards, you pick them off one by one with inverted takedowns, glide kicks and well-placed explosive gel while their nerve breaks and their heart rates climb. Detective Mode highlights skeletons, clues and evidence trails, and the Batclaw, Batarang, Line Launcher and Cryptographic Sequencer gradually open new corners of the island in a structure closer to Metroid than to a typical licensed brawler.

The rogues' gallery is handled with real affection. Paul Dini, longtime writer of Batman: The Animated Series, wrote the script, and Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise Batman and the Joker, with Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn. Killer Croc stalks you through his flooded lair in a sequence built on pure dread, Poison Ivy turns the botanical gardens into a jungle, Bane comes charging in on Titan-fueled rage, and the Scarecrow nightmare segments twist the game itself in ways that still catch first-time players off guard. Meanwhile the Riddler taunts you over the radio, hiding hundreds of trophies and riddles across the grounds.

Before Arkham Asylum, superhero games were usually quick tie-ins, and this one proved that a licensed game could be a carefully designed, atmospheric action-adventure in its own right. It collected a long list of Game of the Year honors, earned a Guinness World Record as the most critically acclaimed superhero game ever, and launched the series that continued with Arkham City and Arkham Knight. On the PS3 it is the place to start Rocksteady's trilogy: a tight, self-contained night on the island that never wastes a minute.
