Item Description

Somewhere on every team in Bases Loaded is one hitter with a short fuse. Pitch inside to the wrong batter, usually the club's best slugger, and he will charge the mound, and part of the fun is figuring out who that is on each roster. That kind of personality is what made Jaleco's 1987 original one of the most popular baseball games of the early NES and the start of a franchise that ran through Bases Loaded II, 3 and 4, a Game Boy version, three Super Bases Loaded games on the SNES and Bases Loaded '96 on PlayStation and Saturn.

Its defining feature is the TV-style view from behind the pitcher, which puts the duel between pitcher and batter at the center of every at-bat. It makes judging the location of a pitch harder than a conventional overhead view, and that is exactly what gives each confrontation its tension. Strong play control and a relatively high degree of realism for the era did the rest, along with quirks fans still remember fondly, like the catcher's improbable reach on pitches thrown far outside.

Twelve teams with fictional rosters fill the league, since few games of the time carried official Major League licenses. You can play a single game, take on a friend in two-player mode, or commit to a full 130-game season, with a password system to pick up where you left off.

Bases Loaded is a cornerstone of the NES sports shelf and the place where Jaleco's long-running series began. If you remember the pitcher's-eye view and the mound-charging brawls, this is where they started, and it is still a fun two-player cartridge today.

About the game

Bases Loaded is a baseball game that was released for Arcade and the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. It was developed by Jaleco and TOSE, and was the first installment in the Bases Loaded series, which was followed by seven sequels for three generations of consoles. The game tried to focus on the confrontation between the pitcher and the batter, putting emphasis on the face-off between the two. Unfortunately, this made the perspective fairly limited in determining where to hit the ball, or even where the ball was during a pitch.
