Item Description

Summer vacation was supposed to be the best part of the year. Instead, Homer and Marge have shipped Bart and Lisa off to Camp Deadly, where head counselor Ironfist Burns, a man with a very familiar surname, runs the place like a boot camp and a pack of bullies is waiting in the bunks. Bart's only plan: survive long enough to break out.

Imagineer's 1991 Game Boy platformer turns a week of miserable camp activities into a series of stages with a real sense of mischief. A life-or-death game of capture the flag sends Bart through the woods dodging counselors, bullies and swarms of killer bees, and the camp's outrageous food fights turn mealtime into a battlefield of flying cafeteria grub. Nelson and his band of bullies are Bart's bunkmates, so there is no safe corner of camp, and Lisa is stuck in this mess right alongside her brother, which gives the whole escape a sibling-team spirit that fans of the show will recognize.

The goal never changes: get Bart and Lisa out of Camp Deadly before Ironfist and his staff can stop them, ideally in time for the first day of school. It is a tough little game, with waves of enemies and not much room to maneuver on the small screen, so expect to replay stages until you have them memorized.

What makes it fun to own today is how squarely it belongs to the early-'90s Bartmania years, when Bart's face was on every T-shirt and lunchbox. It was the first Simpsons game made for the Game Boy, an original adventure written for the handheld rather than a shrunk-down console port, and an offbeat slice of Simpsons history from the show's earliest era.
