In Baroque, dying is not the end of the story. It is how the story moves forward. Each failed descent into the Neuro Tower sends you back to the scorched surface with a little more understanding of what happened to the world, and that strange, cyclical structure is why this dungeon crawler from Sting, the studio behind Riviera and Yggdra Union, has kept a devoted cult audience.
The world has been ravaged by a catastrophic heat, and what is left of humanity has been twisted into grotesque forms, each survivor defined by a Baroque, the warped delusion that gives the game its name. You wake as an amnesiac with no memory of who you are, and the answers lie inside the tower, floor after floor of malformed monsters, scattered equipment and unsettling encounters. The tone is bleak, cryptic and deliberately disorienting, and the fragmented storytelling asks you to piece together the truth from what the few strange figures still standing are willing to tell you.
Underneath that atmosphere sits a demanding roguelike. Floor layouts are randomized, a death sends you back outside to try again, and progress comes from knowledge as much as from experience points. Managing your dwindling vitality, deciding what to risk carrying deeper and learning which creatures to avoid all become second nature. Baroque began as a 1998 Sega Saturn game in Japan, and this Wii release is built on the later remake that rebuilt it in full 3D with a third-person camera, adding new floors, items and creatures and turning it into more of an action RPG, here played with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.
Atlus brought Baroque to North America in 2008, and it arrived as one of the strangest RPGs on the Wii, divisive then and fascinating now. Long before dying became a familiar storytelling device in roguelikes, Baroque was building its whole narrative around it. If you are drawn to dark, experimental games that refuse to explain themselves, this is a haunting expedition worth taking, and Sting at its strangest and most uncompromising.

About the game
An updated remake of Baroque, a post-apocalyptic RPG game in which all hell has literally broke loose on earth. As the game starts, the world has been devastated by a heat wave and left nothing but demon infested ruins and a mysterious "Nerve Tower" which many claim that holds the answers to the apocalypse. You play as an amnesiac survivor who decides to enter the tower in search for clues to both your identity and the reasons behind the apocalypse. The game plays as an RPG dungeon-crawler, in which you control your character and attempt to clear each floor in the tower from monsters, earning experience and items and only occasionally journeying outside the tower to get weapons and equipment from a few NPCs. The PS2 remake adds additional floors, items and creatures and updates the whole game with a completely polygonal engine (the original used 2D sprites to depict characters and monsters). Furthermore, the point of view has been changed from first person to third person and the gameplay has been modified accordingly to make the game more of an action-RPG than the original.
