Item Description

A monkey is waiting at the bottom of the screen, and a tower of bananas is about to disappear in a single gulp. That one image explains why Baku Baku is so easy to fall for. This falling-block puzzler swaps colored gems for animals and their favorite foods, and the Game Gear version packs the whole idea onto a handheld that suits it perfectly.

Pairs of tiles drop from the top of the well, some showing food and some showing animals. Stack bananas, bamboo, carrots or bones into big clusters, then land the matching monkey, panda, rabbit or dog next to them, and the animal eats every connected piece of its food in one bite. The bigger the meal, the more points you score, and the more junk gets dumped onto your opponent's side. Fill their screen so they can no longer place a piece and the round is yours.

What makes it stick is the patience it rewards. Clearing small groups the moment they appear keeps you safe, but holding off to build a huge pile of food and then dropping a single animal on it is far more satisfying, and far more punishing for whoever you are playing against. It is a game that clicks in minutes and keeps you thinking about setups long after.

The Game Gear release was well received in its day: Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviewers praised it as accessible but strategic and named it a runner-up for their Hand-Held Game of the Year, behind Tetris Attack. Arriving in 1996, late in the handheld's life, it gave the Game Gear a puzzle game worthy of sitting next to Columns, and it still has a way of turning a five-minute break into an hour.

About the game

In Baku Baku, the objective is to defeat your opponent by filling their screen to the top with garbage blocks. The gameplay revolves around a unique mechanic where you stack falling blocks of food, like bananas or bamboo, into large clusters, then drop the corresponding animal, like a monkey or panda, next to them. The animal devours the food, clearing the blocks and sending heavy garbage blocks over to your rival's screen to force a loss.
