Item Description

What if a baseball game took the sport seriously but refused to take itself seriously at all? That is the formula behind Bad News Baseball, Tecmo's cartoon take on the national pastime, released in Japan as Gekitō!! Stadium and brought to North America in 1990. The umpires are rabbits. Home runs and close plays trigger animated cutscenes. Batters can be knocked out cold by a wild pitch, and runners can get flattened on a force out. And underneath all of that, it plays surprisingly real baseball.

Twelve teams split into the Ultra League and the Super League, each loosely modeled on a Major League city with matching colors but no real nicknames, and there is no designated hitter. Every roster carries fourteen batters and six pitchers, and pitchers have stamina ratings that take several games to recover, so rotating your staff matters. Four pitch types, stolen bases, pinch hitters and pinch runners give each game real strategy, and games that stay tied after twelve innings end in a draw, just as in Japanese professional baseball.

Your goal is to beat every other team in the league, with a password after each game saving which clubs you have conquered and how rested your pitchers are. Spectator mode lets the CPU play itself, All-Star games add another option, and every game can be played by one player against the computer or two players head to head.

This is the same Tecmo that made Tecmo Bowl, and it shares that game's quick, readable feel. Bad News Baseball is a two-player favorite that still gets laughs, and proof that 8-bit baseball can be both a real strategy game and a cartoon full of rabbit umpires and pratfalls.
