What if the glitches in an old cartridge were a weapon? Axiom Verge builds an entire game around that idea. Trace, a scientist caught in a laboratory accident, wakes up in Sudra, an alien world of biomechanical ruins, where colossal machine beings called the Rusalki ask him to stop Athetos, the man who devastated their civilization. Nothing about the place makes sense at first, and figuring out where you are, and who Trace really is, pulls you deeper into the map.
It plays like a love letter to the original Metroid and its 8-bit contemporaries: a sprawling, interconnected world, upgrades that turn old dead ends into new paths, and an arsenal of strange guns such as the Kilver and the Nova that keep reshaping how you fight. The star is the Address Disruptor, a tool that corrupts reality itself. Glitch an enemy and it may start behaving in an entirely new way or become a platform you can use; aim it at a scrambled wall and the corruption clears into a passage. Add a Laser Drill for tunneling, a remote drone for scouting tight spaces and a coat that lets Trace phase through thin walls, and the world keeps opening in surprising directions.
Thomas Happ made nearly all of it on his own over about five years, handling the design, code, pixel art and the moody synth soundtrack himself, and the result became one of the most celebrated indie games of its decade. Its secrets run deep enough to reward a second and third trip, and a dedicated Speedrun mode shows how tight the underlying design is.
The Multiverse Edition was Badland Indie's 2017 boxed release, giving a game that began life as a download a place on store shelves, and on the PS Vita it put Axiom Verge on a physical game card. Owning the Multiverse Edition means owning the version that brought a modern Metroid-style classic onto store shelves for Sony's handheld.
