There is a moment early in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora when you leave the RDA's concrete and steel behind, step into the Kinglor Forest and the whole screen seems to breathe. Massive Entertainment, the studio behind The Division, built this 2023 adventure on its Snowdrop engine, and its Pandora is dense, vertical and alive: bioluminescent plants that light the forest after dark, colossal trees to climb and creatures that feel like part of an ecosystem rather than icons on a map.
Unlike the films, you are not a human driving an avatar body. You play a Na'vi taken as a child by the RDA and raised in its Ambassador Program. Fifteen years later you are free, but a stranger in your own birthplace, and the story is about relearning what it means to be Na'vi while bringing together the clans of the Western Frontier, a corner of Pandora never shown on screen, to push back against the RDA.
Played from a first-person view, the game leans hard into what being Na'vi feels like. Your size and agility let you sprint and leap through the canopy, your Na'vi senses pick out tracks, resources and threats, and a fully drawn bow hits as hard as anything the RDA carries, though you can turn their own guns against them too. Hunting and gathering matter: a clean kill or a carefully harvested plant yields better materials for crafting gear and cooking meals. Then comes the ikran, the winged mount you bond with, and the Frontier opens up from the sky, whether you are diving on an RDA installation or simply soaring over the Upper Plains.
Critics found the mission structure familiar from Ubisoft's other open worlds, but nearly everyone agreed the world itself is spectacular, and that is what you come for. On PS5 it is a showcase of lush, cinematic detail, and the closest thing yet to exploring Pandora on your own terms instead of watching it from a theater seat.
