Item Description

Sony's ATV Offroad Fury series made its name on the PlayStation 2 with big air, sprawling outdoor courses and a soundtrack that never let up, and Blazin' Trails was the first time it went portable. It arrived in April 2005, in the PSP's opening months, and reviewers singled it out as the first off-road racer on the handheld, an early sign of how much console-style content the system could carry.

There is plenty of it. The single-player championship runs fourteen events, mixing tight stadium races packed with jumps with waypoint races across open terrain where finding the best line between checkpoints matters as much as raw speed. A large library of midair stunts rewards showing off between landings, and four camera angles, including a first-person view, let you choose how close to the dirt you want to be. Riders, quads and gear are unlocked through a collectible card system, which gives progression a fun trading-card twist, and a race creator lets you place gates and build and save your own waypoint courses.

Multiplayer was a big part of the package, with up to four players racing on the same track over local ad-hoc wireless, plus minigames for when the group wants a break from straight racing. The soundtrack carries the series' eclectic edge, pulling in artists as different as Bootsy Collins, Joan Jett and Slipknot. For PSP collectors and fans of the ATV Offroad Fury series, it is a fun, very mid-2000s snapshot of the moment Sony's big console franchises first squeezed into a pocket.
