Item Description
Most anime games ask you to step into the hero's shoes. Attack on Titan 2 does something smarter: it puts you in the boots of a brand-new recruit of your own design and drops you into the middle of the story, fighting beside Eren, Mikasa, Armin and Levi as humanity's last walls start to crumble. Released by Koei Tecmo in 2018 and developed by Omega Force, it covers the events of the anime's first two seasons and lets you live them from the ground, and the rooftops, up.
Everything revolves around the omni-directional mobility gear. You anchor your grapples to buildings, trees and the Titans themselves, gas-boost into the air and lock onto a target's limbs to cut it down before going for the kill at the nape. Severing limbs cripples a Titan and opens the way to the nape, and choosing what to cut first can save your squad. Movement is fast and fluid enough that clearing a field of Titans from above becomes a rhythm, and getting caught off guard by an Abnormal is a reminder of how fragile you really are.
Between missions, the game slows down in a way that suits the series. Daily life segments let you walk the base, talk with the cast and build bonds that unlock skills and support in battle, giving your custom soldier a real place in the Scout Regiment. On the battlefield you can recruit characters from the show to fight at your side and trigger their assist skills, and build supply and combat bases to hold ground. A separate mode lets you take on scouting missions as the anime's own heroes, unlocking more of them as the story advances.
Reviewers rated it a clear step up from the first game, with tighter combat and a richer story, and the Japanese voice cast keeps it close to the anime's tone. If you want to experience the fall of Trost, the Female Titan and the reveals of Season 2 in the middle of the action rather than from the sidelines, Attack on Titan 2 on PlayStation 4 is the most direct way in, and the foundation the later Final Battle release built on.
