Item Description

In Yumia's world, alchemy is not a celebrated craft but a taboo, a discipline viewed with deep distrust ever since the once-great Aladissian Empire fell to a mysterious cataclysm. That premise flips the cozy Atelier formula on its head. Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & The Envisioned Land follows Yumia Liessfeldt, a young alchemist who joins a research expedition into the ruins of Aladiss, investigating what destroyed the empire and why her craft became forbidden.

It is also Gust's biggest shake-up of the series in years. Exploration is far more open, with sprawling regions to roam on foot and, later on, by motorcycle, and Yumia's gunstaff lets her shoot materials loose instead of stopping to gather everything by hand. A nimble triple jump gets her to high places, and dangerous zones can be purified by reaching the landmarks within them. Simple Synthesis lets you craft bullets, repair kits and other everyday items on the go, while the full atelier handles the deeper recipes.

Combat has moved to real time. You circle groups of enemies, choosing between close-range and long-range skills and swapping characters on the fly, and stunning a foe exposes its weakness for heavy damage. Friend Actions let party members combo together, and Mana Surge opens up special moves once the right conditions are met. Synthesis keeps the series' depth while streamlining it: ingredients that resonate with each other feed a recipe's Alchemy Core, and resonance and mana push up quality, stats and traits. Between expeditions you can build and decorate bases of your own with walls, floors, roofs and furniture, a creative side activity fans of base building will love.

Critics were generally favorable, and it became the fastest-selling game in the series, moving more than 300,000 copies in its first week. On PlayStation 5 it is the Atelier that ventured furthest from the workshop, and a fascinating look at how a decades-old series can reinvent itself without losing the joy of crafting.
