Few things on the Atari 2600 feel as good as nudging the thrust, sliding through a field of tumbling rocks and splitting a big asteroid into a spray of smaller ones. Atari's home version of its 1979 arcade smash brought that tension into living rooms in 1981, and it became a huge seller for the system.
The arcade game drew crisp vector outlines, which the 2600 couldn't do, so Atari reimagined the asteroids as solid, colorful shapes drifting across a black sky. The core feel survives intact. Your triangular ship rotates, fires and thrusts with real momentum, coasting until you correct course, and every shot that breaks a rock creates more dangers to dodge. In some settings, flying saucers cruise through the field to make things even more frantic.
What makes the 2600 version special is how much you can customize it. Asteroids offers dozens of game variations, letting you choose between hyperspace, shields or the flip maneuver as your emergency escape and play solo or with a second player. It was also one of the first 2600 cartridges to use bank switching, a technique that doubled the memory available to the programmers and made such a full-featured conversion possible.
It's a perfect pick-up-and-play game for a quick session on original hardware, and a cartridge that helped define what home arcade conversions could be in the early 1980s.
Asteroids for the Atari 2600 is a port of the arcade space shooter released in November 1979. The player controls a spaceship in an asteroid field which is periodically traversed by flying saucers. The objective of the game is to destroy both, asteroids and saucers. The triangular ship can rotate left and right, fire shots straight forward, and thrust forward. Once the ship begins moving in a direction, it will continue in that direction for a time without player intervention unless the player applies thrust in a different direction. The ship eventually comes to a stop when not thrusting. The player can also send the ship into hyperspace, causing it to disappear and reappear in a random location on the screen, at the risk of self-destructing or appearing on top of an asteroid.
