Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Few comic heroes are as woven into European childhood as Asterix, the pint-sized Gaul whose village holds out against Julius Caesar on the strength of a magic potion, and Asterix and the Great Rescue carries that world onto the Sega Genesis. This time the Romans have gone too far. They have carried off Getafix, the druid who brews the potion, along with Obelix's little dog Dogmatix, and the trail leads all the way to Rome. Asterix and his menhir-hauling best friend set off across the countryside to bring them home.

Before each stage you decide which of the two Gauls to send in, and the levels were reworked from the earlier Master System game to suit both heroes. The road to Rome runs past Roman legionaries, swooping birds, scuttling crabs and a snowbound stretch where drifting snowflakes fill half the screen. Bombs and bottled cloud platforms come in small supplies of three, so knowing when to spend them matters, and since neither hero can strike while jumping or ducking, every approach to an enemy has to be planned. It is a demanding, old-school platformer with a reputation for difficulty, and it rewards patience and precise jumping far more than speed.

The pedigree is what makes it fascinating. Core Design, the Derby studio that would create Tomb Raider a few years later, developed the game, and the soundtrack is by Nathan McCree, who went on to score the first Tomb Raider games. His music leans toward the European demoscene sound of the early '90s, the title theme is a standout, and the score is often singled out as the cartridge's strongest feature. Next to the Master System original, the Genesis release also has a noticeably richer, more colorful look.

On an American Genesis shelf it is an unusual sight: a licensed game built around a comic that is a national institution in France, made by a British studio on the cusp of its biggest success. Goscinny and Uderzo devotees get to see the Gauls in 16-bit form, and players who like a stiff challenge get a platformer that never hands out a free pass, with a soundtrack worth hearing through real Genesis hardware.

About the game

It is 50 B.C., and the entire Gaul (today's France) is conquered by the Romans. Only one village still remains independent, thanks to the incredible powers of its two great warriors, Asterix and Obelix. In the game, they must first of all liberate the village Orvio and rescue their friend Dogmatix. The player can play as either Asterix or Obelix. They make their way through platform levels, fighting enemies by punching them, and jumping to access higher ares or to avoid falling down. There are also some items that the player can collect, such as bombs, with which the player can overcome obstacles and advance in the game.
