Item Description

New Orleans in the 1760s is a city changing hands. France has ceded Louisiana to Spain, the docks are crowded with traders and smugglers, and the bayou beyond the city walls shelters escaped slaves, rebels and secrets better left buried. Into that world steps Aveline de Grandpré, daughter of a wealthy French merchant and an African mother, who moves through polite society by day and works as an Assassin under the guidance of Agaté, a Maroon who escaped slavery. She was the series' first female lead, and her mixed heritage is woven directly into how the game plays.

Liberation's big idea is the persona system. As the Lady, Aveline glides through high society, charming and bribing her way past guards who would stop anyone else, though her gown keeps her off the rooftops. As the Slave she blends in with dockworkers, carries crates to slip past patrols and can still free-run across the city. As the Assassin she has her full arsenal, from hidden blade and machete to pistol and a blowpipe for silent work at range, at the cost of drawing attention fast. Choosing the right identity for each mission, and changing at dressing chambers around the city, gives the stealth a social layer the console games never quite tried.

Ubisoft built the game from the ground up for the PS Vita, launching it in October 2012 alongside Assassin's Creed III, and it uses the hardware with real imagination. Touch controls handle pickpocketing and rowing a canoe through the swamp, and one clever moment asks you to hold the system up to a light to read a hidden message. The world stretches from the French Quarter into the bayou, where Aveline swings through cypress branches and keeps an eye out for alligators, and the story even carries her as far as the Maya ruins of Chichén Itzá. Winifred Phillips composed the score.

Liberation was later remastered for home consoles and PC as Liberation HD, but this is where Aveline's story began, designed around the Vita's touchscreen and twin sticks. It is a full-scale Assassin's Creed in a setting the series has never revisited, and it has a strong claim to being the biggest open-world adventure the Vita ever hosted.
