Item Description

Assassin's Creed III pulls off one of the series' boldest tricks in its opening hours. You spend the first act as Haytham Kenway, a charming Englishman assembling a crew in colonial Boston, and only later learn exactly whose side he is on. When the story passes to his son, Ratonhnhaké:ton, known as Connor, the game opens into the American Revolution seen through the eyes of a young Mohawk man fighting to protect his people.

Connor's war takes him through Boston and New York and across a vast frontier wilderness, where free-running carries into the treetops, cliffs and riverbanks. He hunts, trades and builds up a homestead into a working community, and the seasons change the land around him, with deep winter snow slowing every step. Combat brings tomahawks, muskets, a bow and the Hidden Blades, and his path crosses history at every turn, from Paul Revere's ride to the Battle of Bunker Hill. The modern-day thread, with Desmond Miles reliving his ancestors' memories through the Animus, reaches its conclusion here.

The biggest surprise came at sea. Naval combat debuted in this entry, putting Connor at the helm of the Aquila to trade broadsides through storms and swells, and it proved so popular that Ubisoft built the next game, Black Flag, around it. Lorne Balfe's score gives the frontier and the battles a sweeping, cinematic weight. The slower opening divided some players, but the scope of what follows is hard to argue with.

On the Wii U, Assassin's Creed III was part of the console's launch lineup and keeps the map on the GamePad, so navigation stays at your fingertips without pausing the action. It is the chapter where the series crossed the Atlantic and went to war, and on Nintendo's console it is a fitting piece of launch-day history to sit beside its pirate sequel.

About the game

Assassin's Creed III is an open-world action-adventure game set primarily in 18th-century Colonial America during the American Revolution. Players control two characters across the story: Haytham Kenway, a British Templar operating during the French and Indian War, and his half-Mohawk son Ratonhnhaké:ton (also known as Connor), who becomes an Assassin. Gameplay takes place across Boston, New York City, and a large wilderness frontier, with free-running, stealth, and combat using weapons including tomahawks, muskets, bows, and the series' signature Hidden Blades. The game introduces naval combat through Connor's captaining of a warship, as well as hunting, a homestead economy system, and seasonal weather that affects gameplay. A modern-day framing narrative follows Desmond Miles using the Animus to relive his ancestors' memories.
