Item Description
The longship cuts up a misty English river, a horn sounds and your raiding party leaps ashore to storm a monastery. That is the rhythm at the heart of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Ubisoft Montreal's Viking epic, and it captures the game's appeal perfectly. This is a story about a clan making a new home in ninth-century England, and about all the blood, politics and mead-hall boasting it takes to keep that home standing.
You play as Eivor of the Raven Clan, as a man or a woman as you prefer, who sails from the frozen fjords of Norway alongside their brother Sigurd to carve out a future in the fractured Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. The settlement of Ravensthorpe is your base, and it grows as you raid for supplies, building a blacksmith, a barracks, a stable and more, each one unlocking new services and side stories. To make allies, Eivor travels across England's regions, from Mercia to Wessex, entangling the clan in local rivalries and eventually a collision with Alfred the Great himself.
Combat is weighty and brutal. Eivor can dual-wield almost any combination of axes, swords, flails and shields, and a deep skill tree lets you lean into stealth, archery or heavy hand-to-hand fighting. The Hidden Ones, the forerunners of the Assassins, bring Eivor a hidden blade and a role in the war against the Order of the Ancients, which ties the saga into the wider Creed story, with Basim, the later star of Assassin's Creed Mirage, among them. The world is packed with diversions: the dice game Orlog, drinking contests, flyting duels of rhyming insults and mysteries scattered across the map. Visions of Asgard and Jotunheim, where Eivor experiences the world of the Norse gods, add a mythic layer that takes the story somewhere unexpected.
Valhalla arrived in late 2020, right alongside the PlayStation 5's launch, and it became one of the most expansive entries in the franchise. It is a huge game, the kind you can live in for a season, and on PS5 the faster loading and smoother performance make roaming England's hills and rivers a pleasure. It is the Viking saga to choose if you want Assassin's Creed at its largest and most immersive.
