Item Description

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is what happens when a stealth series decides it wants to be a Greek epic. Ubisoft Quebec's 2018 adventure trades hidden blades and quiet rooftops for Spartan kicks, sea battles, mercenary feuds and monsters out of myth, and it commits to the role-playing turn with enormous confidence. It is huge, sun-drenched and full of choices, and for many players it is the most fun the series has ever been.

Set in 431 BCE at the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War, it lets you choose between Alexios and Kassandra, siblings descended from the Spartan king Leonidas, then sends your hero out as a misthios, a mercenary for hire, with Leonidas's broken spear as a weapon. Kassandra in particular won wide praise for her wit and warmth. A family mystery and the shadowy Cult of Kosmos drive the story, while dialogue choices shape relationships, romances and the fate of whole islands, with several possible endings depending on the decisions you make along the way.

The world is one of the largest the series has built, stretching from Athens and Sparta across the Aegean to dozens of islands, and you sail it aboard the Adrestia with Barnabas at the helm and your eagle Ikaros scouting from above. Combat is built around abilities and gear rather than counters: kick enemies off cliffs, rain arrows from range or slip in for a silent kill. A bounty system sends rival mercenaries after you, large conquest battles let you swing the war between Athens and Sparta, and figures like Sokrates, Herodotos, Hippokrates and Perikles turn up as companions, rivals and sparring partners in debate. Hunting legendary creatures such as the Minotaur and Medusa pushes the game openly into myth.

Odyssey completed the series' shift into full open-world RPG territory that Origins began, and its scale, humor and freedom set the tone for what followed. Few games let you spend an afternoon arguing philosophy with Sokrates and an evening fighting a Cyclops, and on PlayStation 4 it is an enormous, generous adventure that rewards every hour you put into it.
