Assassin's Creed Mirage feels like a love letter written in the series' original language. After years of sprawling RPGs, Ubisoft Bordeaux shrank everything down to a single, dense city, ninth-century Baghdad, and put stealth, parkour and the perfectly planned assassination back at the center. The result is a lean adventure that plays like a modern take on the 2007 original, right down to an optional visual filter that recreates that first game's washed-out blue tint.

You play as Basim Ibn Ishaq, the cunning street thief first met in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, years before the events of that game. Haunted by visions, he is taken in by the Hidden Ones and trained at the fortress of Alamut under his mentor Roshan, before returning to Baghdad to dismantle the Order of the Ancients one target at a time. Seeing the man Basim becomes in Valhalla makes his origin story especially satisfying for longtime players.

Baghdad itself is the star. At the height of its golden age the city is a crowded maze of markets, rooftops, mosques and libraries, with the walled Round City at its heart, and it rewards slow, careful movement. Basim blends into crowds, sits on benches, hires distractions and climbs to a vantage point so his eagle Enkidu can scout patrols. Notoriety rises as you make trouble, and tokens can be spent bribing guards, hiring helpers or buying discounts from merchants. The biggest targets are tracked on an investigation board, and many of the major assassinations can be approached from several angles, slipping in disguised, poisoning a guard or simply finding the open window nobody watches. Assassin Focus lets Basim chain several swift kills in a single deadly move, and combat is deliberately harsh enough that getting caught feels like a real failure.

Mirage began life as an expansion for Valhalla before growing into its own game, and that compact scale is exactly its appeal. It is a game you can finish without it taking over your life, and it is a deeply satisfying return to the social stealth that made the franchise famous. On PlayStation 5 the city's crowds, colors and quick loading make sneaking across Baghdad a pleasure, and it is the entry to pick up when you want the classic Creed experience back.
