Item Description

Few moments in open-world gaming match the first time the Jackdaw's sails fill, a storm rolls in over the Caribbean and your crew breaks into a sea shanty. Assassin's Creed III had introduced naval missions, but Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag made the open sea the whole point in 2013, and that shift gave Ubisoft Montreal's pirate adventure a sense of freedom the franchise had never had before. Plenty of players still name it as their favorite entry, and the reasons are obvious from the first hour at sea.

The story begins in 1715, in the golden age of piracy, and follows Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer turned pirate who stumbles into the war between Assassins and Templars by stealing a dead man's identity and chasing the money that comes with it. He is a rogue first and a believer much later, and his slow change of heart gives Black Flag a more human arc than most of the series. Along the way he drinks, fights and schemes alongside real pirates of the era, including Edward Thatch, better known as Blackbeard, Benjamin Hornigold, Charles Vane, Anne Bonny and Mary Read, as the pirate republic at Nassau rises and falls.

The ship is the star. You captain the Jackdaw through broadside duels, chain-shot volleys and boarding actions, plundering cargo to upgrade her hull, cannons and mortars until she can take on the legendary ships that patrol the map. Land and sea flow together without a loading screen, so you can spot an island, drop anchor, swim ashore and climb into a jungle ruin, a sugar plantation or the streets of Havana and Kingston. Harpoon hunting, diving bell expeditions to sunken wrecks, treasure maps and dozens of sea shanties to collect fill the gaps between story missions, all carried by Brian Tyler's swashbuckling score.

On PlayStation 4, Black Flag launched alongside the console in North America, and it is the version that shows its Caribbean at its sharpest, with richer water, foliage and draw distance than the previous generation could manage. Its naval combat became a template later Assassin's Creed games kept returning to, but none of them captured the romance of the pirate life quite like this one. If you want to hoist the black flag on original hardware, this is the place to do it.

About the game

These outlaws paralyzed navies, halted international trade, and plundered vast fortunes. They threatened the power structures that ruled Europe, inspired the imaginations of millions, and left a legacy that still endures.
