Item Description

Aveline de Grandpré moves through 1760s New Orleans in three different skins. Dressed as a Lady, she can charm and bribe her way past guards. As a Slave, she blends in among the laborers on the docks. As an Assassin, she climbs, runs and fights freely but draws suspicion wherever she goes. Assassin's Creed III: Liberation built its whole approach to stealth around that persona system, and it gave the series something it had never had before: a female Assassin at the center of the story.

Aveline is the daughter of a French merchant and an enslaved African woman, raised in privilege but drawn into the Brotherhood, and her fight plays out in Louisiana as control of the colony shifts from France to Spain in the years before the American Revolution. It is the series at its most atmospheric. The crowded streets and wrought-iron balconies of New Orleans give way to the humid bayou beyond the city, where Aveline leaps between cypress branches and stalks targets through the swamp, and her machete and blowpipe suit a hunter more than a soldier. Because each persona opens different approaches, the same mission can be solved with a smile, a disguise or a blade.

Liberation was made specifically for the Vita, and that ambition is what made it stand out in 2012: a full open-world Assassin's Creed, with free-running, social stealth and counter-based combat, carried in your pocket. The touch screen and rear touch pad are worked into the controls, and the game launched alongside Assassin's Creed III on home consoles, giving Vita owners their own chapter of that year's Revolution-era story rather than a cut-down copy of it.

Reviews were solid rather than spectacular, but Aveline's story proved strong enough that Ubisoft later remastered it as Liberation HD for consoles and PC. The Vita release is where she debuted, on the hardware her adventure was designed around, and it is the most ambitious handheld chapter the saga ever received.
