Item Description

Deep underground, humanity lives inside Layered, a sealed city run by an AI called the Controller, and the surface is a place nobody alive has seen. Armored Core 3 drops you into that world as a Raven, a mercenary mech pilot registered with the neutral Global Cortex, taking contracts from Mirage, Crest and the smaller Kisaragi as the corporations jockey for control. FromSoftware used this entry to start the series fresh with a new storyline, and the slow realization that the Controller itself may be the problem gives the campaign a quietly unsettling pull.

The real game is in the garage. Every mission pays out, and the money goes straight back into parts: heads, cores, arms, legs, boosters, generators and weapons, each one shifting weight, energy load and handling. This entry adds Exceed Orbit cores that deploy small hovering gun pods for extra firepower, weapons you can detach mid-mission and computer-controlled allies to bring along on contracts. Building a machine that can survive a cramped indoor fight and still handle an open-field sortie is the puzzle that keeps players tinkering for hours.

Arena mode returns after sitting out Armored Core 2: Another Age, letting you climb the Raven rankings one duel at a time, and multiplayer was designed for two players in split screen or up to four by linking consoles with i.LINK cables, with an offline bot mode for solo sparring. You can even design your own emblem with a USB mouse, a small touch that shows how personal this series wants your machine to feel.

Critics praised the mission variety and the depth of customization and found the controls stiff, since the game predates dual analog support in the series. Played now, that old-school handling is part of the texture of PS2-era Armored Core, and AC3 is where the run of Silent Line, Nexus and Last Raven begins. With Armored Core VI introducing a new generation to the franchise, this is the place to see where so much of its DNA took shape.

About the game

Armored Core 3 once again puts you in the shoes of a Raven mercenary, with the task of piloting your own battle machine to use in a range of tasks (from destroying other mechs to seek and destroy missions). After each missions, you are payed in full. The money raised can then go on towards the purchase of items for your mech. Weapon upgrades, better shields, even the opportunity to purchase what's called an Exceed Orbit, smaller robot gun emplacements that hover around your mech, giving you an added boost of fire power in the crunch. 4 player deathmatch modes are also included, where you each pit your supped-up mechs against each other to see who is the last robot standing.
