Item Description

Long before the Wii's late run of big Japanese RPGs, Arc Rise Fantasia was already offering Nintendo fans the full old-school package: airships, dragons, feuding nations and a party-based quest built specifically for the console. It comes from Imageepoch, the studio behind the Luminous Arc strategy RPGs on the DS, and it reached Japan in 2009 before Ignition Entertainment brought it to North America the following year. On a system better known for party games and fitness boards, it is a substantial, traditional adventure that rewards players who settle in for the long haul.

The story follows L'Arc, a young mercenary fighting for the Meridian Empire, whose duties pull him into a conflict shaped by political rivalry, religious authority and the dragons menacing the land. Companions such as the mysterious Ryfia and L'Arc's comrade Alf give the journey its heart, and the high-fantasy world, with its rival kingdoms and travel through the skies, has the sweep of the console RPGs many players grew up on.

Combat is where Arc Rise Fantasia earns its cult following. Battles are turn-based, but the whole party draws from a single shared pool of Action Points, so each round becomes a budgeting puzzle: pour points into one character's heavy skill, or spread them out for healing, support and steady damage. Summoned Rogress can swing a fight at the right moment, and the bosses expect you to study weaknesses and plan your turns rather than mash through. It is a system with real teeth, and the satisfaction of cracking a hard encounter with one well-planned round is what keeps fans talking about it.

It is not a polished blockbuster. The English voice acting drew plenty of ribbing when the game launched, and the pacing asks for patience. That slightly rough-edged sincerity has become part of its appeal, though, sitting alongside a tactical battle system RPG players still single out. On a Wii shelf of Japanese role-playing games, this is the strategy-minded deep cut, made for the console from the start and well worth discovering if it slipped past you the first time.
