Item Description
Watching an Anno city hum is one of strategy gaming's great pleasures: ships unloading coffee and rum from across the ocean, factories puffing smoke over the rooftops, and a crowd of newly promoted engineers already demanding the next luxury. Anno 1800, Ubisoft Blue Byte's 2019 trip to the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, is widely regarded as the high point of the long-running city-building series, and its console edition brought the full experience to Xbox Series X.
Every city grows through tiers of residents, and each tier wants more. Farmers get by on fish, work clothes and schnapps, but promote them to workers and they start asking for sausages, bread, soap and beer, which means new farms, factories and longer supply chains. Keep climbing through artisans, engineers and investors and your economy becomes an intricate web of production lines spread across several islands and linked by trade routes you design yourself. The real hook is the New World, a second region inspired by South America, where you settle new islands to grow the coffee, cotton, cocoa and sugar cane the Old World craves, with populations of its own to keep happy.
Beyond the economy there is plenty going on. Expeditions send your ships on choose-your-path adventures in search of rare specialists and artifacts, the local newspaper reports on your empire and can be bent toward propaganda, and rival tycoons compete for islands, trade and, when diplomacy breaks down, open naval war. A story campaign eases you in, while sandbox games let you tune rivals, difficulty and starting conditions exactly the way you like, with multiplayer and co-op for sharing an economy with friends.
It is a game that rewards patience in the best way. An evening of careful planning pays off in a skyline of chimneys, steelworks and grand residences that started life as a fishing village, and the satisfaction of a perfectly balanced production chain never wears thin. On Xbox Series X it offers the kind of deep, long-haul strategy that console players rarely get, with an interface reworked to run from a controller.
