Item Description

Remember when a disc full of zoo footage felt like the future? The San Diego Zoo Presents: The Animals! was one of the showpiece titles of the early CD-ROM boom, created by Arnowitz Studios with The Software Toolworks. On home computers it collected a shelf of education and multimedia awards and sold more than 400,000 copies within a year, and in 1994 it made the jump to the Sega CD.

This is not a game in the usual sense. It is an interactive tour built from video clips, audio, photographs and articles, organized into five areas: baby animals, animal facts, animal habitats, the San Diego Zoo itself, and the work of saving endangered species from extinction. You wander where your curiosity takes you, from a habitat to a species to a conservation story, at your own pace.

Honesty matters here: the Sega CD's limited video capabilities were a tough fit, and critics of the port were not kind about the footage. That is part of what makes it such a revealing artifact. It shows Sega and its partners pushing the console as a family multimedia machine, right alongside the action games, and few titles capture that edutainment ambition as directly. On a Sega CD shelf it is a conversation piece from the moment when a game console promised to be an encyclopedia too.
