Item Description

Every Animal Crossing player knows the feeling of rearranging a living room at midnight just to get the rug and the lamp exactly right. Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer takes that obsession and turns it into a career. You join Tom Nook's real estate business, Nook's Homes, alongside the eager young Lottie, and your job is simple and endlessly appealing: listen to what a villager dreams of, then build it for them.

Each client arrives with a theme, from a cozy reading nook to a full-blown fantasy, and you pick the spot for their house, design the exterior and yard, then furnish every room. The 3DS touchscreen does the heavy lifting, letting you drag furniture into place on a map of the room and rotate it with a tap. There is no rent to pay, no bells to save and no waiting for tomorrow's shipment. The whole furniture catalog opens up as you go, so the game is less about scarcity and more about taste.

Before long, Isabelle drops by with bigger commissions, asking you to turn empty buildings around the plaza into public facilities such as a school. When each one opens, villagers move in to play their parts, as students and a teacher in the classroom, so your design becomes a little stage for the cast. Lessons in the Happy Home Handbook unlock new design techniques over time, so your toolkit keeps expanding as your projects grow more ambitious. It was also the first Animal Crossing game built around amiibo, launching alongside the first series of Animal Crossing amiibo cards, which can be scanned to invite a specific villager as a client.

Happy Home Designer is a gentler, more focused spin-off than the main series, and it is best enjoyed by players who light up at the idea of pure decorating. Its ideas did not stay on the 3DS, either: Lottie and the design-for-a-client concept returned years later in Happy Home Paradise for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This is where that idea started, on a handheld built for tinkering in short, satisfying sessions.
