Item Description
Animal Crossing has always been about the calendar: fishing tourneys, turnip prices, the slow turn of the seasons. Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival folds that whole year into a board game, with a village board that moves through the months as players roll the dice. Nintendo released it on the Wii U in 2015 as a way to put amiibo figures and cards at the center of a party game, and it is the only boxed Animal Crossing game on the console.
Each player collects Happy Points and Bells while landing on event spaces drawn from the series, and the goal is to finish the year as the happiest villager in town. The main board game is played with Animal Crossing amiibo figures tapped on the GamePad, so it is designed for households that already have a few villagers on the shelf. Beyond the board, a set of minigames makes use of amiibo cards, and the standout is Desert Island Escape, a surprisingly thoughtful survival puzzle in which a team of villagers gathers resources and crafts their way off an island. A quiz show rounds things out for players who know their series trivia.
Critics were tough on amiibo Festival at launch, mostly over the slow pace of the board game, and it is best approached as a relaxed family game rather than a Mario Party rival. Its charm lives in the details: the villagers, the seasonal events and the familiar music and sounds that make the board feel like a corner of the Animal Crossing world.
For amiibo collectors, it is the game that gives Animal Crossing figures and cards the most to do on the Wii U, and for series completists it is a curious, colorful side chapter released between New Leaf and New Horizons.
