Item Description

Amidar is the rare early maze game where your goal is to paint rather than eat. Konami created it for arcades in 1981, drawing its name and enemy movement patterns from Amidakuji, a Japanese lot-drawing game played on a ladder-like grid, and Parker Brothers brought it home to the Atari 2600 in 1982.

The 2600 version alternates between two oddball scenarios. In odd-numbered rounds you play a gorilla coloring the edges of every box on the grid while a troop of warriors gives chase, with a special Tracer patrolling the outer edge. In even rounds you switch to a paint roller pursued by pigs. Fill in the four corner boxes and the tables turn, letting you chase down the enemies for bonus points; finish the whole grid and you move on to faster, more crowded rounds. A press of the button turns nearby enemies into harmless shadows you can slip through, but you only get a handful of uses per life, so timing them becomes the heart of the strategy.

It is a calmer, more methodical game than Pac-Man, all about planning a route and baiting enemies into the right corner before you close a box. A classic trick is leaving one edge of the last corner untraced until the enemies draw near. Collectors working through the Parker Brothers library will find it a standout: an early Konami arcade design with a rhythm all its own on the 2600.

About the game

Amidar is an arcade game programmed by Konami and published in 1981 by Stern. Its basic format is similar to that of Pac-Man: the player moves around a fixed rectilinear lattice, attempting to visit each location on the board while avoiding the enemies. When each spot has been visited, the player moves to the next level. The game and its name have their roots in the Japanese lot drawing game Amidakuji. The bonus level in Amidar is a nearly exact replication of an Amidakuji game and the way the enemies move conform to the Amidakuji rules - this is referred to in the attract sequence as 'Amidar movement'. A version for the BBC Micro was created but never released.
