Magic: The Gathering single: Ambush Commander. Our grade: Lightly Played or better. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.

Item Description

Ambush Commander turns your mana base into an army. While it is on the battlefield, every Forest you control is a 1/1 green Elf creature that is still a land, so a quiet row of lands becomes a wide field of attackers and blockers. On top of that, for {1}{G} you can sacrifice an Elf to give target creature +3/+3 until end of turn, a combat trick you always have on hand.

It is a five-mana 2/2 Elf itself, and its real value is in the synergies. Because your Forests count as Elves, anything that rewards you for controlling Elves suddenly sees a much bigger number, and the sacrifice ability lets you cash in Forests or tokens for a last burst of damage. The trade-off is real, since a board wipe can take your lands with it, and that high-stakes tension is a big part of what makes Elf tribal in Commander so much fun.

This is the Duel Decks Anthology: Elves vs. Goblins printing, collector number 1, illustrated by Lucio Parrillo, in foil. The 2014 Duel Decks Anthology gathered four classic Duel Decks in one box, and Ambush Commander returns as the foil leader of the Elves side, squaring off against Siege-Gang Commander's Goblins.
