Item Description

The people of Inoa are dying in their sleep. Nightmares are claiming the villagers one by one, and only a shipwrecked stranger can step inside them. That stranger is Alundra, an elf of the Elna clan of Dreamwalkers, drawn to the village by a recurring dream and pulled from the sea by the blacksmith Jess. It is an unusually dark premise for a sprite-based action adventure, and it gives the game an emotional weight few of its peers ever attempted.

It plays like a top-down Zelda with sharper edges. There are no experience points; you grow stronger through new items and upgrades, and through your own improving skill. Dungeons and the island overworld are packed with puzzles famous for their difficulty, mixing block-pushing, precise jumps and terrain that fights back, from sand that slows you down to lava that burns. The dream levels are the standout: each one reflects the personality and fears of the person dreaming it, so every rescue feels personal. Another Dreamwalker, Meia, joins the story as Alundra digs into who, or what, is feeding on the village's fear.

Alundra came from Matrix Software, a team that included veterans of Climax Entertainment's Landstalker, and it is widely seen as that game's spiritual successor. Kohei Tanaka's score earned wide praise, and Working Designs brought the game to North America in 1998 with a localization critics singled out for its restraint. It finished runner-up to Final Fantasy VII for Role-Playing Game of the Year at both Electronic Gaming Monthly and GamePro.

It has since become a cult favorite among PlayStation players who love challenge and story in equal measure. If your favorite part of A Link to the Past was the moment a dungeon puzzle finally gave way, this is the PS1 adventure that will test you hardest.

What a awesome copy

Received Alundra from coolection recently and I’m very impressed! As one who has collected and resold games for years I must say it is truly a clean, well maintained, mint copy! Thanks for the awesome deal on what I already know is a challenging game. It will be a while before I play it but plan on cherishing the experience! I owned the game on its release and never finished it so this will be a good challenge. Thank you Matt
