The first lesson Alien Resurrection teaches is that nowhere is safe. The lights on the USM Auriga flicker, steam hisses from broken pipes, and ammunition is always just a little scarcer than you would like. Argonaut Games' PlayStation shooter, published by Fox Interactive in 2000, is among the darkest and tensest games on the console, a first-person survival horror experience that takes the 1997 film's premise and turns the crippled research ship into a maze of acid, hazards and Xenomorphs.
It was also ahead of its time. Argonaut used the PlayStation's dual analog controller the way nearly every console shooter works today: the left stick moves, the right stick aims. In 2000 that layout struck many players and reviewers as awkward and unfamiliar, but it is the standard now, and it makes Alien Resurrection feel far more modern in the hands than most first-person games of its generation.
Levels rotate between the film's survivors, and each brings a slightly different toolkit. You play as the cloned Ellen Ripley, as Call, whose motion tracker helps you read the dark, as Christie with his twin pistols, and as DiStephano. Your goals revolve around keeping the failing Auriga running long enough to escape it, which means hunting for switches, rerouting systems and steering around environmental hazards while facehuggers and full-grown aliens close in. The atmosphere never lets up, with grimy industrial corridors, sudden ambushes and sound design built to make you jump.
The game had a long road to release. A Sega Saturn version was pulled before it was finished, and planned PC and Dreamcast ports never happened after modest sales, which left it a PlayStation exclusive. That rarity, along with its uncompromising difficulty and deeply frightening mood, has earned it a cult following among horror players and shooter historians. Few licensed games capture the Alien films' claustrophobia this well, and it is a fascinating look at where console FPS design was heading before the rest of the industry caught up.
Gameplay is standard FPS action, with limited ammo and plenty of hazards to detour around or find the switch to deactivate. The player switches between the four main characters at each level change, each with a slightly different set of abilities (Call has a motion tracker, Christie has his twin pistols from the film). Levels are based around keeping the Auriga running, and making their way through the ship to escape. This was to be Fox Interactive's last Sega Saturn game, but development was pulled on the Saturn version before it was completed. PC and Dreamcast ports of the game were also planned but were never developed due to the original title's poor sales.
