Take a hit in Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars and Alex lets out a scream that anyone who played it never quite forgets. It is a fitting sound for one of Sega's strangest platformers, a follow-up that left behind the punches and vehicles of Miracle World for a dreamlike sprint through toy boxes, machine rooms and the inside of a giant's body. The game began as a Japan-only arcade release in 1986, and the 1988 Master System version was how most players outside Japan got to see it.

The premise is simple and wonderfully odd. Alex sets out to recover the twelve lost Zodiac signs, hunting down miracle balls tucked inside unlikely objects such as a Christmas present, a pumpkin and a desk bell, then carrying them off into outer space. Along the way he crosses Toy World, Machine World, the World of Make Believe, Water World, Monster World and the Giant's Body, each a bright, busy stage stuffed with oddball enemies. Clear the final shrine and the game sends you through every level again with new enemies in your way.

Everything runs against a clock, and the Master System port reshapes the arcade rules around it. Instead of a stock of lives, Alex gets unlimited tries: taking a hit or falling into a pit costs precious seconds and sends him back to the last checkpoint, so the real enemy is the timer. That turns each stage into a puzzle of rhythm and routing, learning where to jump and where to hurry, more than a test of combat.

Reviews have always been split. Computer and Video Games praised its "jolly and colourful" graphics, while later critics felt it lost some of Miracle World's momentum. That contrast is part of the appeal for Master System fans: The Lost Stars is the most surreal stop in Alex's run, a slice of mid-'80s Sega arcade whimsy that plays like nothing else in the series, and the home version that brought his Zodiac hunt to the rest of the world.
