Thirteen years after Alan Wake vanished into the dark waters of Cauldron Lake, FBI agent Saga Anderson arrives in Bright Falls to investigate a string of ritualistic murders, and finds manuscript pages describing events before they happen. Remedy Entertainment's long-awaited sequel takes everything that made the 2010 cult classic special and reshapes it into full survival horror, with a story that splits between two protagonists and two very different nightmares.
Saga's half is a dread-soaked investigation through the Pacific Northwest woods and small towns. Her Mind Place, a mental case board where you pin evidence, connect clues and profile suspects, turns detective work into a satisfying puzzle of its own. Alan's half is stranger still: trapped in the Dark Place, he wanders a shifting, nightmarish version of New York, and in his Writer's Room he can rewrite a scene with new plot elements, literally changing the environment around him to find a way forward. Combat is tense and deliberate, with scarce ammunition and the series' signature flashlight, used to burn away the darkness that shields enemies before a single bullet can hurt them.
What makes Alan Wake II unforgettable is how far it is willing to go. Live-action footage blends with in-engine scenes, Remedy creative director Sam Lake plays the hard-boiled Alex Casey, and one chapter, a full-blown rock musical set to Old Gods of Asgard, is the kind of sequence players still talk about. Its craft was recognized at The Game Awards 2023 with wins for Best Narrative, Best Art Direction and Best Game Direction, and it draws threads from Remedy's wider universe, including Control, into a single, mind-bending whole.
The Deluxe Edition is the version of the game released alongside the Expansion Pass, which covers two expansions. Night Springs is a trio of standalone episodes inspired by the series' in-universe, Twilight Zone-style TV show, and The Lake House sends the Federal Bureau of Control into a research facility on the shore of Cauldron Lake. Alan Wake II first launched digitally in 2023, with physical editions following in October 2024, which makes a PS5 Deluxe Edition the way to have the full story, expansions and all, on the shelf.
