Item Description
Few games have a premise that needs more explaining at the checkout counter. In Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed, vampire-like creatures called Synthisters have infiltrated Akihabara, Tokyo's Electric Town, quietly draining the social energy and will to live from the otaku who gather there. Only direct sunlight destroys them. So the solution, presented with a completely straight face, is to tear their clothes off in the middle of the street.
Combat is built entirely around that idea. You pick a weapon and target an enemy's upper, middle or lower body, wearing down that piece of clothing until you can rip it away and let the sun do the rest. Combos, guards, counters and forced strips keep brawls moving, and as your strip skill improves, clothing comes off intact so you can add it to your own wardrobe. Team up with the right allies and a full meter unlocks a unison strip that hits one Synthister hard and stuns the rest of the crowd.
The real star is the district itself. Acquire recreated Akihabara with more than 130 real shops, so wandering between missions means browsing actual stores, dropping into maid cafés and training in the battle arena to raise your rank. Your hero, Nanashi, is an otaku high schooler who was turned into a Synthister by the shadowy Magaimono organization and managed to escape. The story unfolds visual-novel style, and your dialogue choices build affection with characters like the mysterious Nighteater Shizuku Tokikaze and childhood friend Tohko Sagisaka, steering you toward different endings.
Critics were split when XSEED brought it west in 2014: the writing and the sheer amount of content won praise, while the combat drew complaints about repetition. That mixed reputation is part of the charm. Akiba's Trip is a self-aware, gleefully silly snapshot of Japanese otaku culture at its most unfiltered, and the Vita version feels like the natural home for it, a pocket-sized tour of Electric Town with a very strange tour guide.
