Item Description
It is Sunday in Akihabara again. And again. And again. Asahi Tachibana, a self-proclaimed NEET who wants nothing more than to play games and watch anime, discovers that Tokyo's otaku district is stuck repeating the same day, and that strange delusions are bleeding into the streets. Akiba's Beat, from Acquire, the studio behind Akiba's Trip, turns that premise into a lighthearted action RPG that doubles as a love letter to Electric Town.
Asahi is not much of a hero at first, and that is the point. He is pushed into action by Saki, a determined girl who refuses to let him stay useless, and by Pinkun, a floating, toy-like mascot companion with plenty to say. Together with a growing party, they dive into Delusionscapes, surreal dungeons born from people's obsessions, to defeat the Phantoms at their core, collapse the delusion and bring the neighborhood a step closer to Monday.
Combat plays out in real time, with Asahi and friends fighting on a plane in the style of Bandai Namco's Tales series and the ability to switch between party members on the fly. Combos are limited by Action Points, so careless button-mashing leaves you open, and a beat meter fills as you fight. At half, a music track kicks in to buff the team; when it is full, the arena transforms into a beat-battle mode that powers up every attack. Music is woven right into the fighting, which suits a game so concerned with fandom and Akihabara's pop culture.
Released in Japan in 2016 and in the West in 2017, Akiba's Beat landed late in the Vita's life, part of the stream of Japanese RPGs that made the handheld a cult favorite. Its English localization and affectionate portrait of Akihabara's game shops, manga stores and maid cafes make it a fun discovery for Vita collectors who love the system's quirkier imports and localizations.
