Item Description

Mach 2, a bomb load to drop on a target barely bigger than a compact car, and a cluster of bogeys closing in on your six. AirForce Delta wastes no time putting you in the cockpit, and it captures the arcade side of air combat with a confidence that made it a standout among the Dreamcast's earliest releases. Konami built it for the console's launch window in 1999, and it still has that early-hardware swagger.

You fly as a mercenary under contract, and the deal is simple: the more you take out, the more you take home. Every mission pays, and that money goes into a hangar of more than 30 real-world military aircraft, so the campaign has a satisfying loop of earning, upgrading and choosing the right plane for the next job. Missions mix tight dogfights with ground-attack runs, and the later sorties fill the sky with enemy fighters and anti-aircraft fire at speeds that still feel exhilarating.

The controls are pitched for fun first. It is approachable enough to pick up and fly within minutes, yet the variety of aircraft, from nimble interceptors to heavier strike planes, gives flight fans plenty to tinker with. Detailed jet models and generous draw distances were an early showcase for what the new hardware could do, and with no Ace Combat on Sega's machine, this was the Dreamcast's answer to the genre.

AirForce Delta also launched a small Konami series, followed by AirForce Delta Storm on the original Xbox and AirForce Delta Strike on the PlayStation 2. This first entry is the arcade-pure original where it all began, and a sharp, replayable flier from the console's opening months.
