Samuel L. Jackson voices both the stoic swordsman Afro and his foul-mouthed alter ego Ninja Ninja, and that pairing sets the tone for everything in Afro Samurai. In this world, whoever wears the Number One headband is the deadliest fighter alive, and Afro wants the man who killed his father to wear it. The 2009 game adapts the anime's five-episode revenge arc, reshaping parts of it for play, while Ninja Ninja keeps up a running commentary as profane and funny as fans of the show would expect.
The combat is the main event. Light and heavy sword strikes, kicks and blocks feed a combo system with more depth than it first lets on, and enemies roll, duck and hop over Afro's blade, so you have to read them rather than just flail. Monty Oum, later the creator of RWBY, worked on the combat system, and it shows in the fluid, acrobatic flow of the fights. The signature move is Focus: time slows, you charge a strike and aim it, and Afro can split an opponent clean in half. The sheer variety of ways to dismember enemies keeps the bloody action from going stale.
Visually, the cel-shaded style and hand-drawn textures make the game look like the anime brought to life, and the soundtrack is inspired by RZA, the Wu-Tang Clan producer who scored the series. Boss fights hinge on a single trick, like reflecting bullets back at a gunman or slicing an incoming rocket-propelled grenade in two, and they make for some striking set pieces even when the camera doesn't cooperate.
Reviews were mixed, praising the swordplay while knocking the camera and repetition, and the adventure runs about five hours, which makes it an ideal one- or two-evening blowout today. It is a snapshot of a moment in the late 2000s when a Samuel L. Jackson-led samurai brawler could land a full console release, and few licensed games of its era captured their source's attitude this completely.
Afro Samurai is a 3D brawler with platforming elements loosely based on the manga and anime series of the same name. Using light hits, power hits, kicks, and blocks the player fights various enemies. Most levels culminate in a boss fight, and in-engine cutscenes advance the story. The game features a cel-shaded animation style. Though it is a hack and slash game, the "fighting is a bit more strategic" and the player will be able to block and use combos. The enemies will respond by rolling, ducking and hopping over the player's blade and occasionally using body orifices to catch the weapons, the combat system was worked on by Monty Oum.
