Item Description

Aliens have snatched Jeannie Jungle, and Master Higgins is not about to let a little thing like an extraterrestrial kidnapping ruin island life. Subtitled Aliens in Paradise, this second Game Boy adventure from Hudson is built on the NES's Adventure Island 3, and on the small screen it plays like a polished, confident platformer built for the handheld.

The structure is generous, with area after area of stages, hidden levels tucked behind secret exits, and bosses guarding the way forward. Higgins is as fragile as ever on foot, where a single hit costs a life, so the eggs scattered through each stage matter. Crack one open and you might find a hatchet or a boomerang, or better yet a dinosaur partner. The dinos are the heart of the game: one carries you swiftly through underwater stretches, others bring special attacks for the tougher enemies, and each one can soak up a hit that would otherwise end your run. Keeping your current mount alive through a tricky section becomes a quiet obsession.

What makes this one stand out from the first Game Boy Adventure Island is the feel. Movement is smoother and more responsive, which takes a lot of the sting out of the series' trademark precision jumping, and the backgrounds and animation are impressively detailed for a monochrome cartridge. The soundtrack has a bouncy, catchy island energy that sticks with you after the power light goes off. It holds its own on a system crowded with great platformers, and it makes a fine companion to Super Mario Land.

Among Hudson's handheld outings, this is the entry to own: the dinosaur-riding depth of the later NES games, area after area of fruit-grabbing, egg-cracking platforming, and the hidden exits that send you back into earlier stages looking for what you missed.
