Item Description

For a whole generation of DS players, the Action Replay was the cartridge that turned "what if" into a menu option. Datel's Action Replay DSi updated the long-running cheat device so it would run on Nintendo's newer DSi handheld, carrying the familiar plug-in, pick-your-codes formula into the last stretch of the DS family's life.

The idea is simple and still a lot of fun: your game card plugs into the Action Replay, you boot the Action Replay from the DS, pick a game from its menu and switch on the codes you want before launching. Datel built the system so that new code lists could be managed and added through its PC Code Manager software, which is how players kept their Action Replays growing as new games came out. Infinite health, maxed-out items and experimental tweaks that let you poke at a game's inner workings were all part of the appeal.

The DSi version also had a new hurdle to clear. The DSi checks the cards inserted into it far more strictly than the original DS and DS Lite, and getting a cheat cartridge running on that hardware is a big part of what set this edition apart from the older Action Replay DS.

It is a fun, practical slice of handheld gaming history from the era when cheat cartridges were a fixture at every game counter, and a natural pickup for DS tinkerers and collectors of gaming accessories.
